Miley Cyrus Poised To 'Smash' Onto The Charts With "Wrecking Ball"

Miley Cyrus, despite her massive following of tweens, has yet to find herself atop the Billboard Hot 100 charts. That fact seems like it's got no choice but to change with the buzz she and her team have been able to create around her single "Wrecking Ball". The song is the second single off her album Bangerz, and set a record on Vevo upon its' release last week on September 9th; within just 24 hours, the video had 19.3 million plays. 8 days later, as of the time I'm writing this to you (around 7:30 PM EST on 09/17) the video has over 116 million streams on Vevo alone. Who knows what that play count would look like if it included an aggregate of everywhere the song is available for streaming.

So what's the video causing all this hoopla?

Today In History - Elton John performs a re-written "Candle in the Wind" at Princess Diana's Funeral

September 6th, 1997 - Elton John Plays a Personalized Version of "Candle in the Wind" at Princess Diana's Funeral

For those old enough to remember all of the coverage surrounding Princess Diana's death and her funeral, I think one would be hard pressed to find a moment that better encapsulated the world's sentiment than Sir Elton John's heart-breaking (in the best way possible) rendition of "Candle In The Wind". The song was originally written in 1973 as a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, another iconic woman taken from the world at far too young of on age. In honor of his performance 16 years ago today, and the two great women with whom he's honored using this song, here's a video of it. For more on the history of the song check out the History Channel feature on it here.

Hugh Laurie Sings The Blues and Then Takes Them On The Road.

Hugh Laurie is an English actor, comedian, writer, director and musician. Born in Oxford, England, he took piano lessons from the age of 6, and has stated that he has loved American music from the time he was a child. Best known for his role as Dr. Gregory House on House M.D., he has won 2 Golden Globes, 2 Screen Actors Guild awards, and has 6 Emmy nominations under his belt.

Laurie’s debut album entitled Let Them Talk was released in France and Germany in April of 2011. His latest album Didn’t It Rain was released in May in the UK. Laurie is planning a major tour of the UK to promote Didn’t It Rain. His US/Canadian tour for the album which releases August 6th starts this fall.

Both albums were produced by Joe Henry, and Didn’t It Rain was recorded in Los Angeles in January 2013. The Copper Bottom Band are Laurie’s supporting musicians, but Didn’t It Rain features special vocals by Gaby Moreno, Jean McClain and Taj Mahal, a Grammy-winning blues musician. New Orleans blues ran deep in Let Them Talk. For his second album, Laurie gears it more towards an American heartland blues, in order to feature a different sound. Laurie says that the further he goes into the realm of American blues, the more he falls in love with the songs and the people who play them.

Fans were given the option to pre-order a limited edition backpack plus a digital album, which included a 2 CD backpack with 5 bonus tracks, and a digital deluxe album with a “making of” video for $29.99 on his website. Or pre-order the CD plus the digital album which includes the album on CD and the digital deluxe album with “making of” video for $11.99, also on the website. Journey is Back and Still Rocking Hard

The 1980s rock band Journey is literally enjoying a renaissance with new touring and dates across the U.S. The return to popularity of the band is a story in its own, as the lead singer is not the original of Journey, Steve Perry, but instead new singer, Arnel Pineda. Journey's current singer is backed up by original band members Neal Schon on lead guitar and Ross Valory on bass, as well as Dean Castronovo on drums and Jonathan Cain on keyboards and rhythm guitar.

Jeter: Now You See Him, Now You Don't

The crowd starts their applause as the Yankees take the field. When the modern-day Yankee icon Derek Jeter appears after a nine month absence, they go wild! Screams of delight can be heard over the screeching of subway trains, the commonplace too high decibel level of police sirens and the sounds of the big city.

Jeter crouching before an at-bat.

Derek Jeter is the ultimate present-day Yankee. He is New York City's all-around good guy. The city loves him and he loves them. His return to the game has Yankee fans grinning from ear to ear. His first at bat in the game against the Kansas City Royals yielded a hit and Yankee fans expected nothing less of him. The game proceeds and the fans are happy, Jeter is happy and the rest of the team is happy - until he gets hit in his quad muscle and succumbs to yet another injury. Before the nine innings are even finished, he is again out of the game, through no fault of his own.

Johnson Makes History at Daytona

Jimmie Johnson became the first driver in 31 years to win both the Daytona 500 and the July race in Daytona, the Coke Zero 400, within the same year.  The last NASCAR driver to perform this feat was Bobby Allison in 1982.  The win makes Johnson only the fifth driver in NASCAR history to be able to sweep both Daytona races in a single season.  Besides Johnson and Allison, the other drivers to accomplish this were Fireball Roberts, Cale Yarbough and LeeRoy Yarbough.

One Direction Announces Release Date for "Best Song Ever"

One Direction - Best Song Ever (Cover)

One Direction, the boy band that has taken the world by storm with their catchy melodies and enchanting personas, has announced the release date of their next single The song, entitled " Best Song Ever" is set to release worldwide on July 22nd. If you want to hear this song before then be sure to check out their summer long nationwide tour. But if you think that you can wait to see these guys in concert next year you should reconsider, as this time next summer the boys may be on a break.

Simon Cowell, the man behind the wild success of One Direction, has said in a recent interview that the boys may be heading for a break. When asked for the reasoning behind this statement, he said that he really wants to make sure the boys stay fresh and do not fall out of love with their craft. He cites Justin Bieber's recent struggles with being over-worked as an example of what can happen when you expect too much from your artists.

Alex Rodriguez Causes Drama With His Comments

Old Worn Baseball Glove

If there is one thing that every professional athlete should know, its that every bit of news must go through the proper chain of command before it is leaked to the media. This allows everyone to get their story straight before it is leaked to the media. Unfortunately, Alex Rodriguez has broken protocol and it has landed him in hot water with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman.

Rodriguez has been out all year on the disabled list due to hip surgery that he had last winter. Recently he has been rehabbing the injury in simulated games until he received clearance from team doctors to take his rehab to the next step with actual in-game action. The controversy arose when Rodriguez took to Twitter to announce to his followers that his surgeon has cleared him to play in rehab games. While one may think that this is news the Yankees would be happy about, the reaction from Brian Cashman seems to suggest otherwise.

The Legendary Band Opens Itself to a New Generation Before Hitting The Road

Forty two years have passed since Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner came together in Los Angeles to form one of the most influential and successful bands of all time. Since that fateful day in 1971, the Eagles have sold over 150 million albums and the rise of online streaming and internet downloads have provided them an opportunity to grow their fan base well beyond that mark. The band has been reluctant, however, delaying the release of their albums on Spotify until this week.
