UFC 162: Silva vs. Weidman | Is Silva Due a Loss?

July 6th, MGM Hotel and Casino is hosting what should prove to be one of the best events of the year—at least in the eyes of UFC fans. UFC 162 has a lineup that cannot be beat, with the headline fight featuring Anderson Silva.

Anderson Silva is widely considered to be the greatest mixed martial arts fighter of all time. His record of 16-0 in the UFC Octagon arena speaks for itself. However, in this event—UFC 162—Mr. Silva may face his toughest foe yet.

Chris Weidman is a virtual unknown—other than to the most hardcore fans. He has had less than 10 fights over his short career, but this could prove to be the one that puts him into the spotlight.

Professional commentators have said that Weidman has the ability to be the one to finally defeat Anderson Silva. In many ways, Weidman fights similarly to Chael Sonnen—a fighter that nearly overtook Mr. Silva. However, Weidman has an understanding of the sport that Sonnen did not. He will be less likely to fall for the traps that Silva is best known for using to catch his opponents off guard.

While Chris Weidman may have a plan, even the best laid plans can go out the window when you are faced with a fighting legend like Anderson Silva. Silva is graceful and elegant—he turns a UFC fight into a dance of sorts. Can Chris Weidman, a man better known for his brute force than any type of artistry, overcome “the GOAT?”

Anderson Silva is, of course, the favorite in this fight. However, there are enough experts out there willing to state that it should be a close fight that many fans are starting to cast doubt of the ability of Silva to pull through again. For young Weidman, this fight will let him show the world what he’s made of—win or lose, he just has to prove a point. However, for Anderson Silva, the stakes are even higher. Can he protect his undefeated record despite his age? Every time he steps into the ring, spectators know that it could be the last—making this an event that no UFC fan can afford to miss.
