The Legendary Band Opens Itself to a New Generation Before Hitting The Road

Forty two years have passed since Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner came together in Los Angeles to form one of the most influential and successful bands of all time. Since that fateful day in 1971, the Eagles have sold over 150 million albums and the rise of online streaming and internet downloads have provided them an opportunity to grow their fan base well beyond that mark. The band has been reluctant, however, delaying the release of their albums on Spotify until this week.

The Eagles' reluctance to release their music should come as no surprise to the band's faithful followers. This latest effort to withhold digital rights to their albums follows a slew of legal acts that have kept the band busy fighting for what is rightfully theirs. For instance, earlier this year the band was one of the highest-profiled artists to reclaim the rights to their recordings, activating a law that states the property is theirs for the taking after 35 years of record label ownership.

The Eagles' historic entrance into the streaming market secured a major victory for the industry as one of its longest holdouts essentially endorsed its validity. It's likely that the band witnessed the success that other 70's bands, like Pink Floyd, were experiencing and decided they wanted a piece of the pie. It is also no coincidence that the band is about to embark on an epic tour that will carry all the way until November 23rd. The five month, international "History of the Eagles Live in Concert" tour will undoubtedly see a spike in ticket sales from the publicity and subsequent burgeoning fan base that results from this week's news.

While the band has yet to release a statement about the release, they have to be pleased with the results. An unprecedented level of publicity partnered with inescapable promotions by the streaming services have conjured up more excitement for the band than has been seen in decades.
