Jeter: Now You See Him, Now You Don't

The crowd starts their applause as the Yankees take the field. When the modern-day Yankee icon Derek Jeter appears after a nine month absence, they go wild! Screams of delight can be heard over the screeching of subway trains, the commonplace too high decibel level of police sirens and the sounds of the big city.

Derek Jeter is the ultimate present-day Yankee. He is New York City's all-around good guy. The city loves him and he loves them. His return to the game has Yankee fans grinning from ear to ear. His first at bat in the game against the Kansas City Royals yielded a hit and Yankee fans expected nothing less of him. The game proceeds and the fans are happy, Jeter is happy and the rest of the team is happy - until he gets hit in his quad muscle and succumbs to yet another injury. Before the nine innings are even finished, he is again out of the game, through no fault of his own.

There are a lot of dejected souls in New York City these days as they slowly wait to find out the fate of their team hero (affectionately known as "The Captain"). Is the Captain washed up again? Is he going to finally have to face the fact that he can't force back the hands of time?

While facing an All-Star game without him, the real question is not only will he miss that big game, but how many games after that?
